Fire chief resigning in Grass Valley

Jim Marquis will resign as fire chief of Grass Valley July 25 to take a job as a battalion chief with the Sierra Forest Fire Protection District in the Reno area.

Marquis confirmed his resignation this morning, but deferred questions to City Administrator Dan Holler.

“It’s a great opportunity for him and he’ll be missed on a city-wide basis,” Holler said. “It’s a loss on our end but it gives us an opportunity to look at how we’ll provide fire services.”

A half-time person will be hired for about six months to one year to transition from Marquis to whatever the position becomes, Holler said.

With declining revenue growth and higher expenses, the city has pared more than $1 million from its upcoming budget to balance it.

Cuts have included one layoff of the city park ranger and voluntary work furloughs will be discussed at Tuesday night’s city council meeting.
