Fire assessment vote deadline today

Residents in the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District must turn in their ballots by 5 p.m. today if they want their votes on the proposed fire assessment to count.

Ballots can be hand-delivered before 5 p.m. to the Clerk of the Board located in the District’s Administrative Office at 11329 McCourtney Road in Grass Valley.

The sealed ballots will be sent to an independent auditor and will be counted on Friday at 9 a.m. at Station 84, which is located at 10135 Coyote St. in Nevada City. Members of the public are invited to watch.

Property owners’ votes are weighted based on how much their properties would benefit from the increased fee. In order to pass, there must be a majority of weighted votes. The fee increase varies, but it would cost a single family home $89 annually.

The Fire District Board will be holding a regular board meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at Station 84.
