Festival brings in $1,900 for community center

Supporters of creating a new community center in western Nevada County have raised about $1,900 toward their goal in a recent fundraiser.

The Gold Country Community Center is trying to raise about $100,000 to renovate and expand an aging clubhouse in Grass Valley’s Memorial Park, Manna Fest co-organizer Mary Padua-Fisher said. The Manna Fest, held Oct. 10, brought in about $1,900 after expenses, Padua-Fisher added.

More than 1,500 people attended the day of live music, dancing, gymnastics, avant-garde fashion show, food carts and more than 30 vendors.

Ten bands performed, Troupe de Trash offered a show of recycled materials and speakers discussed climate change and the awareness group, 350.org.

Organizers and other who assisted with the event include Victoria Bliss, Jivan Swann, Russell Altman and Jim Rasa. They are planning a similar event for next year, Bliss said.

Supporters of the Gold Country Community Center, which operates a Meals on Wheels service for seniors at the Nevada City Senior Apartments, would like to see the center expand to serve all ages. The city of Grass Valley has a $100,000 grant it can use on the renovation project, expected to cost about $400,000. In addition, the Gold Country Community Center received a bequest of $200,000.
