Father finds son, 3, drowned

A little boy from Grass Valley drowned Sunday afternoon after being out of his father’s sight for just a few minutes.

Sheriff Keith Royal said father Oscar Castrejon, 29, was at a friend’s home on the 14800 block of Stagecoach Way in Rough and Ready when his 3-year-old son, Kayden Castrejon, went out in the backyard to play with the dogs at about 4 p.m. Within a few minutes of realizing he could not hear his child playing, Castrejon went outside to find the boy drowned in an old fountain about 12 feet wide, Royal said.

“Whenever it involves a child like that, it’s tragic,” Royal said. “By all indications, it’s accidental.”

Emergency crews from the Rough and Ready and the Penn Valley fire departments responded but could not revive the boy. The youth was taken by ambulance to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital by the Sheriff’s Office, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy’s mother, Sarah Stokes, age unknown, of Grass Valley, was working at the time of the incident. Deputies located her and took her to the hospital.
