Fair extends deadline for entries

The Nevada County Fair is extending its deadlines for entries, chief executive Ed Scofield said Friday.

Scofield said the number of contest entries, which has been as many as 10,000 in past years, are lagging so far this year.

The original deadlines to submit paperwork was 1 p.m. Saturday and July 18 for online entries. Now the fair will accept paperwork entries until July 18 and online entries to July 25.

About 5,000 entries have been submitted to date for the competitive exhibits, which is a couple of thousand less than last year at this time, Scofield said.

Livestock, clothing and jam-making are among the many areas where county residents compete for awards at the fair. Scofield said the number of entries is a “key indicator” of overall attendance.

Scofield wasn’t ready to blame the smoke-filled skies for the lag in entries on Friday, but he said fires and their impact on the area aren’t helping, either.

“People probably aren’t thinking about events right now,” he said.
