Expanding services: Open house scheduled for Nevada City homeless day center

know & go

What: Open House at the Streicher House

Where: 606 Gold Flat Road, Nevada City

When: 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday

The Streicher House, a homeless day center in Nevada City, has expanded its mission since opening early this year.

The house’s organizers want the community to see what the center offers, and will open its doors from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday to those who want a tour.

“It’s so that people can see what we’re doing now,” said Shirley Kinghorn, executive director of Divine Spark. “We’ve expanded our program.”

The house, at 606 Gold Flat Road, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. Kinghorn said she’s examining the possibility of opening the center seven days a week.

Free meals are at the heart of the homeless center. Since opening, it has grown its services and now provides access to showers, washers and dryers. It also has hygiene products and a clothes bank.

“We are giving away lots of hats and coats and socks,” Kinghorn said.

Divine Spark, the nonprofit behind the Streicher House, eliminated its food voucher program to focus on serving food at the homeless center. Kinghorn said the operation is now more efficient.

Part of that efficiency includes visits from county employees to the center. Those employees help connect center guests to services.

Divine Spark receives funding from large and small donors. People can donate any amount online through its website: http://www.divinespark.us.
