Executive leaves United Way

Jan Bray, longtime executive director of the United Way of Nevada County, resigned Tuesday “for personal reasons,” the organization announced.

Bray, who held the position for 13 years, had signaled her intention to leave the post, “and today was the day,” Betty Stiving, president of the board, said Tuesday.

“She did an excellent job, but there are some personal issues she wants to deal with,” Stiving added.

Bray couldn’t be reached for comment Tuesday evening.

The UWNC raised about $355,000 in its 2001-02 fund drive, down $20,000 from the year-earlier period. Stiving blamed the disappointing total on the events of Sept. 11, and said it was not a factor in Bray’s departure.

Stiving said the search for a new executive director will start immediately, and United Way is confident it can find the right person close to home. “There’s plenty of talent in our area,” she said.

The organization hopes to have the new executive director on board in time for the annual fall kickoff breakfast for the 2002-03 fund-raising campaign.
