Enjoy the gorgeous weather while it lasts

All good things must come to an end, and that includes the unseasonably warm weather western Nevada County residents have been enjoying this week.

After hitting a predicted high of 76 to 78 degrees today in Grass Valley, temperatures are expected to drop until the high end bottoms out at 58 on Wednesday, according to Harry Stockman, president of the Qwikcast.com weather service.

“There’s some cooler air moving in aloft,” he said. “It’s still going to be nice, it’s just not going to be warm like it was the last few days.”

But what a week it was. Nevada City posted three record highs this week – 74 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, and 77 on Thursday – and was expected to set a record on Friday.

Grass Valley hit a record high of 82 degrees on Thursday and was at 80 Friday afternoon, eight degrees above the record high for March 11.

While the temperature was just 64 Friday afternoon at Blue Canyon, it was hot enough this week to start the snow melting in the Nevada Irrigation District’s watershed.

Sue Sindt, operations supervisor for NID, said the water content of the snowpack dropped 1 to 2 inches this week, earlier in March than usual.

“But it’s all going into reservoirs,” she said. “We’re just putting it in storage a little sooner than usual.”
