The unseasonably warm and dry weather western Nevada County has experienced recently is expected to carry into this weekend and next.

“Except for Sunday, we’re not looking at any real threat of precipitation through next weekend,” said Steve Martinez at the Qwikcast.com weather service.

A long dry spell is expected after Sunday, when a chance of showers is expected in the afternoon and evening, Martinez said.

The National Weather Service in Sacramento and The Weather Channel’s weather.com Web site are predicting warm temperatures for January, with highs in the upper 50s from this weekend through the next.

“This weekend is looking very nice,” Martinez said, with temperatures expected to rise near 60 today and into the upper 50s Saturday. “Lows will be mild in the lower to mid-40s,” Martinez said.

High temperatures will dip a bit Sunday into the mid and low 50s, Martinez said, “with just some light showers, real sporadic,” possible in the afternoon.

“It’s going to be sunny up in the hills,” Martinez said, “and near 60 again Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday – good golfing and tennis weather.”

Martinez said skiers might want to take advantage of good traveling weather and clear days at the high-elevation slopes during the period. “But temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s, so definitely take your sunscreen if you head up there.”

Boreal Mountain Playground reported a packed powder base of 168 inches Thursday and Alpine Meadows had 140 inches of variable surface. Both resorts reported an almost-perfect ski comfort index of nine out of a possible 10 for today and an eight for Saturday.
