Employment in county remains the same

Nevada County employment in July was essentially unchanged from the year-earlier period, with 28,890 people holding down jobs, the state Employment Development Department reported Friday.

Gains in the manufacturing and transportation, warehousing and utility sectors were offset by a continuing drop in jobs at food service and drinking places.

Manufacturing jobs increased 9.3 percent to 1,990 positions from a year earlier, while transportation, warehousing and utilities jobs were up 7.8 percent to 550. Jobs in food service and drinking places were down 7.3 percent to 2,160 jobs.

The county’s unemployment rate of 4.6 percent was ninth-lowest in the state, well ahead of surrounding counties Placer (12th), Sierra (41st) and Yuba (54th).

California’s unemployment rate was 6.5 percent, up one-tenth of a point from June but down from 7.2 percent a year earlier. Nationally, the unemployment rate stood at 5.7 percent, up one-tenth of a point from June but down from 6.3 percent a year earlier.
