Elevator fire disrupts GV post office Friday afternoon

An electrical fire at the Grass Valley Post Office cleared out the building for a short time Friday afternoon, but was quickly extinguished.

Smoke billowed out of an elevator in the Main Street office, and supervisor Tong Field sent customers and employees outside while he and another employee took an extinguisher to the fire.

Grass Valley police and Ophir Hill Fire District responded to the incident.

Customers were able to finish their business before the end of the day Friday.

No mail was damaged, but the elevator – which lowers carriers to their vehicles – is out of service indefinitely, Field said.
