Electronic junk can be recycled for free

During the month of April, Nevada County residents can dispose of their electronic gadgets free of charge.

Hazardous items can be disposed of for free at the McCourtney Road Transfer Station, 14741 Wolf Mountain Road in Grass Valley.

Electronic waste that cannot be placed in the trash but could be recycled during April for free includes: Electronic circuit boards, batteries, color cathode ray tubes, television sets, computers and computer monitors, printers, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players, cellular telephones, telephones, radios, microwaves, household batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, button cell, 9-volt and rechargeable), and fluorescent and compact florescent bulbs, lamps and tubes.

The transfer station also will take mercury-containing items including electrical switches and relays, thermostats, thermometers, pilot light sensors, mercury gauges, shoes with lights made before 1997 and music-playing cards.

Many common household products and electronic equipment contain hazardous components and chemicals that can contaminate our air, water, wildlife and land if improperly disposed. Placing these items in the trash can also harm your garbage handler.

The transfer station is open everyday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and can be contacted at 265-1768. For more information, call the Nevada County Recycling hotline, also at 265-1768, or visit new.mynevadacounty.com/iwm.
