Dry spell expected to bring relief

Western Nevada County residents can expect fairly clear weather until Friday night after pouring rain and some mountain road closures on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The stormy weather that swept through the county during the weekend caused momentary power outages in Grass Valley on Saturday, said Paul Moreno, a spokesman for Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

The storm also closed Interstate 80 in the Sierra and led to chain controls on Highway 20 – just as skiiers were returning home. About 205 people and 135 pieces of snow equipment were working on the I-80 corridor, according to a California Department of Transportation spokesman.

But clearer skies are just around the corner, according to weather experts.

“The weather is improving, and we believe any outage trouble should be minimal,” PG&E’s Moreno said.

Despite strong winds and pouring rain, no flooding occurred in western Nevada County, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. High wind warnings were in effect throughout the Sacramento Valley.

I-80 was closed on and off again on Sunday from Applegate to the Nevada state line because of “poor visibility,” according to Caltrans. The closure came as skiiers tried to return home from the Presidents’ Day weekend.

Highway 20 required chain controls east of Nevada City to the junction of I-80.
