Driver in fatal wreck arrested

A 19-year-old Nevada City man was arrested Monday for driving under the influence and for vehicular manslaughter after his girlfriend died during a car wreck while he was driving.

Emmet Stark Farrell remains in fair condition with head lacerations and a broken clavicle in John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. He was transported by helicopter from the scene of the 2:31 a.m. car wreck on eastbound Interstate 80 near the Highway 4 turnoff.

Christa Griffiths, 27, of Grass Valley died when she was ejected from the vehicle after it swerved into the center divider and overturned, according to CHP reports. The freeway was closed for an hour after the wreck.

Farrell will likely remain in the hospital for a couple of more days, said Chris Perez, a nursing supervisor at the hospital. He’ll be booked into the Contra Costa County Jail in Concord upon his release, said Officer Kerry Grimes of the California Highway Patrol’s Martinez office.

The vehicle may have been traveling more than 80 mph at the time of the accident, according to CHP reports.
