Drainage improvements to impact traffic on Highway 49, north of Nevada City

The California Department of Transportation is alerting the public that traffic delays will occur on Highway 49 north of Nevada City between Old Downieville Highway and Cedarsong Road from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday until Dec. 1 for drainage improvements, excepting Nov. 25-27 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

According to Caltrans, recent reviews by staff found a number of deteriorating and perforated culverts in the project area. In anticipation of the negative impacts on Highway 49 by high-intensity rain events due to the predicted El Nino weather, Caltrans is replacing various culverts and drainage inlets. Replacing the deteriorating culverts requires alternating lane closures in the project area near Shoshoni Trail Court. Motorists should anticipate up to 15 minute delays for one-way traffic controls through the project area and are encouraged to use caution while driving through the Caltrans work zone.

Weather or other unexpected events may prolong the work or cause construction activities to be rescheduled. Motorists are urged to be “Be Work Zone Alert” and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.” Caltrans will issue updates on Twitter @D3PIO and on Facebook at CaltransDistrict 3.
