Draft Horse Classic expands to 4 nights

The Draft Horse Classic will add a Thursday night show and increase ticket prices this year.

The Nevada County Fair Board voted Tuesday to add an extra Thursday night show to the classic. Tickets for the new show will cost $8 for all seats.

Other shows will go up in price, from $12 to $15 for reserved seating, $10 to $12 for bleachers, and $55 to $60 for season tickets.

The higher-priced tickets will offset the costs of putting on a fourth show and increased prize money paid to attract top exhibitors to the show, set for Sept. 19-22.

The Thursday show is estimated to cost $24,680, but is predicted to bring in only $10,000 in revenues even if tickets for it were $12, according to fair board figures.

The fair board is adding a fourth show to reduce the length of shows that currently run four to five hours long to three to three and a half hours. Shows have become longer because of the number of exhibitors.

3The whole idea is to shorten weekend shows, especially on Friday,² said Ed Scofield, chief executive officer for the fair.

Higher prize money will also be paid for larger classes. A blue ribbon winner will net $1,325, up from $425, in the class for teams of six and up; and $1,075, up from $200, in the class for four and up.

The board also discussed traffic control with board members of the Certified Growers Market, but took no action.

The two boards will meet again to discuss the issue, and the growers market board will look at traffic controls at its meeting next month.
