Dog days of summer

Gordon Toms pulled back on Gob’s leash Sunday as the mutt lurched forward in excitement at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Toms, of Colfax, brought Gob to mingle with the show breeds at the Gold Country Kennel Club’s 10th annual dog show.

“This is pretty highfalutin company for him,” Toms said, noting Buster’s rather questionable lineage. “A spaniel got into the pen with something else, we don’t really know what, but he’s a great dog. I like to come just to look at all the breeds that show up here. It’s pretty amazing.”

Buster took no notice of the slight to his ancestry as he sniffed after a pair of purebred beagles getting ready to show.

They were just a few of the 1,401 different dogs who competed over the weekend. Some people came from the farthest reaches of California to compete in the show, which featured more than 170 different breeds.

Some of the breeders, like Dublin, Calif. resident Sherry Swanson, make the stop as another in a long line of shows during the summer and fall.

“It seems like we don’t have a free weekend until after October,” Swanson said. She brushed her Lhasa apso, Stopit, who won the sporting group Saturday, as she watched Sunday’s competition. “I know a lot of people who have been hitting the circuit more than we have.”
