Documentary sheds light on depression

Dealing with a child’s suicide is far from easy, but even such a devastating experience can lead to something positive.

How the family of Steve and Gail Beeman carried on after their son Chris’ 2004 suicide is part of a documentary airing at 7 p.m. today on PBS station KVIE entitled “ViewFinder – Depression: Into the Light.”

In the first 10 minutes of the program, the south Nevada County couple and their family tell how they came to realize Chris was suffering from situational depression at the time of his death.

The Beemans also discuss how a suicide can lead to depression in those around the deceased.

Other portions of the show will look into clinical depression and depression in the elderly.

Gail Beeman is forming a support group for survivors of suicide loss. A full story about that will appear in Friday’s Health and Fitness section on page C1 of The Union.

Other times the show will air on KVIE – which is often Channel 6 on cable lineups – are as follows:

• 10:30 p.m. today.

• 10:30 p.m. Thursday, KVIE Channel 2.

• 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Friday.

• 6 p.m. Sunday.

• 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
