District names superintendent

The Nevada City Elementary School District has picked veteran educator Roger Steele to run the 1,400-student school district.

Board President Paula Campbell said Steele, 54, accepted a three-year contract and will be formally introduced to the full board Feb. 10.

“We’re very excited and very pleased,” Campbell said. “I think Roger’s going to be great for our district.”

Steele comes to Nevada City after a stint as superintendent/principal of the 510-student Gerber Union Elementary School District, a K-8 school in Tehama County. He begins his job July 1.

Steele has also served as an administrator in the Chico Unified School District.

A committee of nine, as well as a California executive search firm, both scouted and reviewed applicants to replace John Halverson, who resigned last year to take a job with the Sylvan Unified School District in suburban Modesto.

Holly Hermansen, principal at Gold Run School and the district’s special education coordinator, served as interim superintendent and was not a candidate for the permanent position.

Three trustees visited Gerber last week before offering the $105,000 job to Steele.
