Diesel fuel leak near homes under control

An estimated five gallons of diesel fuel leaked last week from a vandalized generator at a construction site at Eskaton Village off Ridge Road, county officials reported Friday.

Treasure Homes, a company based in Roseville, is building 130 patio homes at Eskaton Village, a retirement community.

“No public health hazard was created from this incident,” the county’s department of environmental health wrote in a statement.

Grass Valley Police Department Capt. Greg Hart said that sometime during the evening of Oct. 9, the fuel line on a generator was cut.

Phil Barnes, operations manager for Treasure Homes, said he wrote in a letter to the county Friday that a subcontractor was called Oct. 10 when the police were notified. But the subcontractor “was not responding in the manner they represented,” and another company was called the next day.

According to the county report, some 750 feet of storm drain line, seven inlets and the area south of Nevada Union High School were inspected. The spill was contained on the site, the county said, but diesel fuel was detected in the first 500 feet of storm drain. An absorbent boom was installed in the drain inlets and manholes, and the line was steam-cleaned and vacuumed, said Barnes, adding that the cleanup was completed Thursday.

Kurtis Zumwalt, a program manager at Nevada County Environmental Health Department, said no further action is needed at this time.
