Dem. Assembly candidate set for open-heart surgery

A Democratic state Assembly candidate has scheduled triple-bypass heart surgery three weeks before the November election.

Michael “Mickey” Harrington, a Butte County resident running for the 3rd Assembly District, set the surgery for Oct. 13 and expects to be in the hospital for five days after that. He is running against incumbent Republican Dan Logue, of Linda, and Grass Valley Libertarian Gary Bryant in the Nov. 2 election.

The surgery will “absolutely not” affect his campaign, Harrington said, noting the added publicity of his ailment has probably helped him.

Harrington missed a League of Women Voters forum in Marysville due to a doctor’s appointment, but said he will appear as scheduled at tonight’s forum in Grass Valley.

Harrington has lost about 45 pounds in the past six months. Doctors first though he had tuberculosis, but later diagnosed him with a virus.

“I just recently found out about it,” the three-time candidate said. “I was fighting it for a while.”

At the time of the diagnosis, doctors found he also needed surgery to clear blockages in his heart.

After the surgery, “I’ll be better than I was,” Harrington said. “I don’t want to go (to the Assembly) not in good shape.”
