Define ‘Buy local’

The “buy local” mentality in Nevada County is both parochial and self-defeating.

Where would California agriculture be if the rest of the world decided to buy only locally produced rice, wine, almonds, etc.?

Nevada Countians, make a point to stop at the roadside produce stand in the Brunswick Basin. Ask the proprietor where he’s from. You may be surprised. Hint: He’s not “local.”

Should Truckee residents give preference to western Nevada County products, or should they “buy local” in nearby Reno? Where does local end and foreign begin? The county line? State line?

If quality local products are available and competitively priced, they’ll sell themselves. If not, they don’t deserve to be propped up by protectionist shoppers or public policy.
