Debris trail leads to burglary suspect

Without the bread crumbs, Grass Valley police followed a Hansel and Gretel-type path to a man accused of burglarizing an East Main Street store Monday morning.

A trail of food wrappers and other alleged evidence led to the arrest of 22-year-old Jonathan R. Callahan, who’s accused of breaking into the Station House, where the owner reported that roughly $3,000 in food, liquor, cigarettes, lottery tickets, a microwave oven and other items were stolen.

“It’s a bummer because we just bought the store,” owner Grady Jones said. “I hope it ain’t something that keeps happening.”

Jones said he learned three people might have been involved and that he had a hard time believing one person could have pulled the alleged break-in.

Police were called at 6:20 a.m. by a worker who reported a brick was tossed through a front window. Officers arrived and followed a trail of litter to a home less than a tenth of a mile away, Sgt. Brian Reno said.

All items were recovered “except for what he ate,” Reno said, referring to about $60 in candy.

Jones said the stolen items included a $1,000 saw and $530 in scratch off lottery tickets, which he said would have been useless because state gaming officials immediately record stolen tickets.

Callahan was booked into Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail.
