Deadline for senior firewood applications is approaching

Because aging lowers the body’s ability to endure long periods of cold, seniors are greatly at risk of hypothermia. To prevent this potentially dangerous situation, the Senior Firewood Program was established in 1979 by a group of volunteers dedicated to helping low income seniors stay warm and healthy.

The Senior Firewood Program is self-funded through the sale of oak and campfire bundles. Each year the number of clients served varies according to available resources (wood, volunteers and funds). In a typical year, the program is able to serve 100-125 senior households.

The wood provided is a mixture of pine, fir and cedar, and is delivered by volunteers, using their private vehicles. The wood provided is intended to supplement other heating sources.

Seniors may qualify if they meet the following criteria: Nevada County resident living in the Greater Grass Valley area; 65 years of age or older; lives alone or with another eligible senior; very low income.

All prospective seniors (new and returning) must apply by Aug. 15 to determine their eligibility and need. Applications received after Aug. 15 will be placed on a waiting list. Our goal is to serve those seniors most in need, so eligibility is re-assessed each year.

Seniors in need of assistance may call GCCS (273-4961) or Helpline (273-2273) to inquire.

In order to provide firewood at no cost to low income seniors, GCCS sells a limited amount of oak firewood each season. The cost of this firewood is $275 per cord. The price includes delivery to those who live within 10 miles of Grass Valley. Call 273-4961 to place your order.
