Dead airman is identified

An airman who collapsed at the Beale Air Force Base fitness center and died en route to a Marysville hospital Thursday was identified Sunday as Senior Airman Amon Cook, 24.

Cook was stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz., and was temporarily assigned to Beale for training at the time of his death, said Capt. Mike Andrews, chief of Beale AFB Public Affairs.

“(Cook) was in the fitness center running on a treadmill when he collapsed and started seizing,” Andrews said Sunday.

Emergency personnel responded to the fitness center and an ambulance rushed Cook to Rideout Hospital in Marysville.

“He was dead on arrival,” Andrews said.

Cook’s family was notified of his death Friday evening.

An autopsy was performed on Andrews over the weekend, and the cause of death should be released this week.

Andrews said Beale AFB launched its own investigation into the incident and determined the death was not a homicide.

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Public Affairs Officer Melissa Maraj said more information about Cook, including his hometown, had not been available over the weekend.
