A man who collided into an 18-wheeler on Interstate 80 in Nevada County faces major injuries and a DUI charge, the California Highway Patrol states.

James Downing, 44, of Davis, fractured his sternum and received cuts to his arms and legs in the Thursday wreck, just east of Drum Forebay Road, a release states.

Passenger Katherine Downing, 29, of Davis, has a pelvic fracture, broken ribs and cuts to her forehead, CHP officers said.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured.

According to the release, James Downing was driving his Buick Lucerne west on I-80 around 12:10 p.m. when he changed lanes. He then collided into the back of the 18-wheeler. Downing lost control of his car, which swerved across all traffic lanes and stopped in the center median.

Officers arrived and gave both Downings medical attention. They then arrested James Downing, and took both injured people to the hospital, the release states.
