DAR sponsors essay contest on expedition

Celebrating U.S. History, Nevada County’s Captain John Oldham Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution has distributed American History Essay Contest materials to all elementary schools in the Nevada County School District. In keeping with the 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark Expedition, this year’s topic is “Along the Trail with Lewis & Clark and the Corps of Discovery.” All fifth-, sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders are eligible to enter.

Awards to the winners at each grade level are a $100 U.S. savings bond and a bronze medal. The winning essay will be sent on to be judged at the district and state level, where additional awards are given.

An awards ceremony is slated for Feb. 5 at the Office of Nevada County’s Superintendent of Schools. All entries must be received no later than Nov. 5. Entries to be sent to Joelle Sipes, 11737 Upper Circle Drive, Grass Valley 95949. For more information, call 478-0110.
