Crash victim is in critical condition

A Grass Valley woman was in critical condition with major facial injuries after a Thursday motorcycle crash that the California Highway Patrol is still trying to sort out.

Sherry Lynn Bridges, 51, suffered facial fractures and lacerations after she wiped out on Highway 49 near Smith Road south of Grass Valley just before 3:30 p.m. She was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

Officers have two accounts of the crash and hope possible witnesses can provide more information, CHP Spokesman Troy Marks said.

A witness said that Bridges crashed her southbound 1982 Harley Davidson while trying to avoid a pickup truck pulling a trailer that was in the midst of a U-turn.

The pickup driver, 82-year-old Thomas J. Moody of Grass Valley, said he was southbound when he came upon stopped traffic. He claimed he swerved into a left turn lane to avoid traffic in front of him, and that Bridges crashed as he returned to the southbound lane and she swerved to miss him, Marks said.

Bridges, who was wearing a helmet without facial protection, was ejected and her motorcycle struck a mile post sign. The crash stopped traffic for about 45 minutes.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call the CHP at 273-4415.
