County unemployment up, but better than last year

Nevada County’s unemployment rate for January jumped slightly compared to December, but was lower than a year ago.

The state Employment Department’s preliminary report for January showed the county’s unemployment rate at 5.1 percent, compared to 4.6 percent in December. The January rate was below the year-ago estimate of 5.3 percent, according to Mary Mahoney, a labor market consultant with the state.

That compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 6.7 percent for California and 6.3 percent for the nation during the same period.

The unemployment rate in nearby counties: 6 percent in El Dorado, 5 percent in Placer, 5.9 percent in Sacramento and 16.4 percent in Yuba.

The total number of wage and salary jobs in Nevada County declined from 28,650 in December 2003 to 28,350 in January, a decline of 300 jobs, Mahoney said.

Natural resources, mining and construction lost 350 jobs over the month. Retail trade followed with a drop of 140 jobs, and transportation, warehousing and utilities, and local government each lost 20 jobs.

Offsetting these losses were gains in the entertainment and recreation industries of 140 jobs. Education and health services gained 50 jobs, professional and business services increased payrolls by 40 jobs, and manufacturing added 30 jobs.
