County jobless rate dips

Nevada County’s unemployment rate edged down while other areas moved up, giving it the state’s seventh-lowest ranking in July, according to figures released Friday.

Nevada County unemployment in July was 4.2 percent, down 0.3 percent from June’s 4.5 percent, according to preliminary figures from the state Employment Development Department.

The figures are not adjusted for seasonal effects.

That decline was the opposite of what happened in some other areas. It boosted the county to the seventh-lowest unemployment ranking among California’s 58 counties, tied with El Dorado, San Diego and Sonoma counties.

June unemployment was revised upward 0.1 percent from last month’s figures.

The total number of jobs in Nevada County – 28,740 – was down 2.3 percent from a month ago, and 0.9 percent from last July.

Most of the job losses were in public education due to school summer breaks, said Mary Mahoney, labor market consultant for the Employment Development Department.

Seasonal businesses such as retail trade and restaurants added workers, although construction employment was down 3.4 percent from last month, or about 100 jobs. Construction employment was down 7.7 percent from July 2001.

State unemployment stood at 6.6 percent in July, and U.S. unemployment was 6 percent. Both were unchanged from last month’s figures.
