County added to disaster list for storm damage

Nevada County has been added to a national list of disaster areas for storm damage sustained between Dec. 17 and Jan. 6.

Residents and business owners in Nevada County who sustained rain or mud damage to their property only during that period can file a claim for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

FEMA spokeswoman Christine May said residents must file before the deadline for add-on counties, April 4.

“Get registered as soon as you can,” she said Thursday. “It’s a process you want to start right away.

Nevada County residents can register by phone at 1-800-FEMA(3362) or online at http://www.fema.gov.

Registrants should have the following information available at the time of registration: a phone number where you can be reached, the address of damaged property and a mailing address, a brief description of damages, a social security number and insurance information including policy numbers.
