Cooler weather could bring rain

A cooler front will move in from the coast today and could cause showers and even a thunderstorm in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

“A high-pressure area moving to the east will cause partly cloudy skies with a chance of showers and a slight chance for isolated thunderstorms into Tuesday,” said Harry Stockman of the Qwikcast.com weather service. While the chance for rain is sketchy, a plunge in temperatures is fully expected.

Daytime temperatures during the recent warm, humid spell in the high 80 and low 90s across western Nevada County, “will drop about 10 to 15 degrees,” Stockman said. Highs are expected in the upper 70s to low 80s Friday, and in the upper 60s to low 70s Saturday through Tuesday.

The National Weather Service said that recent nighttime lows in the 60s will drop into the high 40s Friday night and then into the high 30s through Tuesday. Because of that, the weather service warned campers and backpackers in the Sierra to be prepared for cold weather which could get wet.

The recent warm spell brought higher humidities with it due to a high pressure system that was pushing moisture over the Sierra from the Gulf of California, Stockman said.

Heavy April rains also put a lot of moisture in the ground that boosted the humidity as it was released into the air.
