Contest for young writers open

Young writers can win $150, $125 or $100 in a local short fiction contest.

Sierra Writers sponsors this opportunity for writers ages 15 through 19 who either live in or attend school in Nevada County. Cash awards go to the first, second, and third place winners and to honorable mentions.

Submit the entry form along with your story of no more than 2,000 words by April 1. Make sure you meet the contest requirements.

Find the entry form and the rules at the “Young Writers” link of http://www.sierrawriters.org. To increase your chances of winning, make your story fresh, captivating and, of course, well-written.

Topics by past winners include home life, racism, politics, sexuality and world events. Story tone also varies – sometimes heavy, sometimes light, sometimes offbeat or controversial.

Sierra Writers encourages young writers to develop their skills and to gain feedback and recognition. It doesn’t hurt for a college applicant or budding writer to have a contest win on his or her resume.
