Commentary: Understanding Bowen Technique therapy

Developed in Australia by Tom Bowen in the 1950s, the Bowen Technique, or Bowenwork as it is referred to in the U.S., is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy. It is a gentle and effective manual therapy which embodies a holistic approach to health care. Bowenwork rebalances the entire body allowing self-promoted healing by stimulating the body’s own healing response. A Bowen session has the unique ability to bring about positive changes in the body without the use of force or painful manipulations. This technique is so gentle that it can be beneficial for anyone at any age.

Bowenwork is a light-touch therapy of the muscles, tendons and fascia (connective tissue) that balances tension patterns in the body. It utilizes small precise inputs to the fascia, tendons and nerve bundles over very specific points stimulating the body’s own healing abilities. Bowenwork not only affects the musculoskeletal framework but also the internal organs, soft tissue and nerves resulting in enhanced function of the entire workings of the body. Improved circulation, lymphatic drainage, increased range of motion from old and new injuries, and relief from auto immune conditions are just a few of the benefits noted from Bowen sessions.

The main principle of Bowenwork is to restore balance to the body via the autonomic nervous system, which controls all the unconscious aspects of the body including the “fight or flight” response.

Restoring this balance in turn stimulates the body’s own healing mechanism. Many of us live in our “fight or flight” mode, always functioning in high gear. Stress is a constant factor in our lives. Long-term stress can lead to hyperactivity in the nervous system. This can wreak havoc with the body’s immune system, sleep patterns, digestion and many other aspects of our health. Allowing the nervous system to slow down during a Bowen session has beneficial effect on our entire being.

Usually a session lasts about one hour and is performed on a massage table or in a chair fully clothed in loose-fitting clothing. The price is comparable to massage and is usually performed in the practitioner’s office. Home visits can be arranged in certain situations. The practitioner places their fingers or thumbs on the skin and applies gentle rolling pressure to effect change in the underlying tissue.

Three to five sessions one week apart is what is recommended for most sports injuries, work-related injuries and problems arising from overuse.

Clients with autoimmune, neurological and other chronic health disorders usually improve with additional sessions and ongoing maintenance.
