College to celebrate Global Women’s Day

Sierra College has arranged events from Oct. 24-26 to celebrate Global Women’s Day and People and Cultures Day.

Meiko Jones, a Zen Master, and Bhikkhuni Ayya Tathaaloka, a Buddhist nun, will speak on “Women and Buddhism” at the Rocklin campus on Oct. 24. The talk will be hosted by the Philosophy of Religion class in Building MT7 at 12:30 p.m.

Jones is the prior of the Portland Buddhist Priory in Oregon and Tathaaloka belongs to the Dhammadharini Bhikkhuni Vihara Buddhist Center in Fremont.

The talk will address the topic of equality for women in Buddhist practices. There will be limited guest seating.

On Oct. 25, members of the Bear River Meditation Group from Applegate and people from the Mountain Stream Meditation group of Auburn will be at a booth from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (near the Cafeteria) during the People and Cultures Day to answer questions about Buddhism and its practices.

Both events are free and the public can participate. There is a $1 daily campus parking fee. Parking permits can be purchased at machines in the parking lot.
