Cinema building may keep colors

The mustard-yellow Spring Hill Shopping Center passed muster this week when its unauthorized paint scheme was forwarded to the Grass Valley Planning Commission by the five-member Development Review Committee.

Committee members, Downtown Association President Howard Levine, and Sierra Cinemas co-owner Mike Getz offered support for the color changes, which created a bit of a stir when the paint went up in July.

The shopping center on East Main Street was authorized for “subdued” gray, dark gray, burgundy and slate blue when it was approved a decade ago, Community Development Director Joe Heckel said.

But some residents rallied to the support of the now yellow, green and maroon building, whose fate lies with the Planning Commission.

In other business, the committee discussed preliminary plans to locate a Jimboy’s Tacos in the former Togo’s building on Nevada City Highway in the Brunswick Basin. The area was annexed into Grass Valley last week, Planning Director Tom Last said.

Applicant Ted Laffron’s plans included a drive-through and a stucco exterior with a Spanish motif. The committee recommended reworking the building to reflect the heritage of Grass Valley, Last said.

Laffron will also need to conduct a traffic analysis for the drive-through, Last said.

J.R. Knudson, the founder of Jimboy’s Tacos, once owned a restaurant in Grass Valley.
