CHP officer released from hospital after crash

A California Highway Patrol officer was injured Tuesday morning when his motorcycle struck a deer on McCourtney Road, according to the CHP’s Grass Valley office.

Officer Bryce Hertan, 42, of the Grass Valley area, was traveling southbound on McCourtney on his CHP motorcycle at 4:45 a.m. when a deer stepped into the roadway. Hertan’s motorcycle struck and killed the deer, and then went down, throwing him off.

An ambulance took Hertan to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital with cuts, abrasions and pain in his left shoulder, Pingree said. Hertan was treated and released, hospital spokesman Craig Wilcox said.
