CHP officer hurt in motorcycle wreck

A California Highway Patrolman was slightly injured Tuesday morning when his motorcycle struck a deer on McCourtney Road, according to the CHP’s Grass Valley office.

Officer Bryce Hertan, 42, of the Grass Valley area, was southbound on McCourtney on his CHP motorcycle traveling to work in North Sacramento at 4:45 a.m. when a deer stepped into the roadway.

The officer tried to avoid the deer but couldn’t, according to Officer Jeff Pingree. Hertan’s motorcycle struck and killed the deer and then went down on its left side, ejecting him.

An ambulance took Hertan to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital with cuts, abrasions and pain in his left shoulder, Pingree said. Hertan was treated and released, according to hospital spokesman Craig Wilcox.
