‘chill out’ about Climate Change

Most folks who study global warming seem to agree that our planet is getting progressively warmer, but I’m getting tired of reading about it on a daily basis. Whether it’s really a problem, what’s causing the phenomenon, and what we can do about it (if anything) are hot-button issues that stir up shouting matches at cocktail parties and family reunions. It can be fun to compare theories about the causes for global warming. I’ve heard the more common theories, ranging from automobile emissions to bovine flatulence. A more recent theory, bizarre as it may seem, includes some pretty impressive numbers.

In the year AD 1, the world’s population has been estimated to have been about 150 million people. By the year 1985, the same world was supporting a population of about five billion. Assuming all of the folks walking around in AD 1 had a normal body temperature of 98.6 degrees, their combined temperature would have been a constant of 14 billion, 790 million degrees. By 1985, their combined heat load would have been 493 billion degrees. Perhaps the best method for reducing global warming is for all of us to chill out about the entire subject.
