‘Chili Billy’ takes top honors at cook-off

It was perfect “chili weather” when hundreds of chili aficionados descended on Rough and Ready Sept. 29 for the community’s annual Chili Cook-off.

Thirteen of the area’s top chili chefs cooked their special concoctions and made them available for judging by a panel of judges, as well as the public at large. The Chili Cook-off, a non-sanctioned event, left the International Chili Society and adopted its own Rough and Ready Rules in 2004.

Visitors were able to purchase tasting kits to sample the various offerings, listen to the music of the Fruit Jar Pickers, take a chance on Chicken Roulette and watch the blacksmith demonstrations in the Fippin Blacksmith Shop and view the antique autos of the GraNeva A’s. Additional food was offered by the Rough and Ready Grange No. 795 and the Firefighter’s Auxiliary.



The Cook-off resulted in a double win for Team Chili Billy and team leader Billy Williams of Grass Valley, who won first place and $500 in the judged competition, as well as the People’s Choice $250 award. Second place and the $250 cash prize was awarded to Mondog’s Chili and Team Leader Monte Downing, also from Grass Valley.

From Penn Valley: Paul Ruffo and Jim Black’s Black Bart’s Chili; Jimmy Cooper’s Cornbread WHAT!!!; Jeremiah Johnson’s Buffalo Boy’s BBQ; Jewel Willis’ Clucker Plucker’s Chili; Anna Dillavou’s Dillavou Spice; and Joyce DeChiecio and Charlene Turner’s Granny’s Awesome Chili.

From Grass Valley: The Amerigas Gas Passers, led by John Murphy and Keith Marcussen.

From Fernley, Nev.: Ron Bessette Jr. and Sr. and their Hot Chills.
