Shawn Lawrence is a chef, a runner, the student body president at Bear River High School, and a lifeguard who hopes, someday, to be chief of a fire department.

On Tuesday, this well-rounded teen-ager will whip up his senior project in the kitchen of the Alta Sierra Country Club.

“Chef Shawn” will fulfill his graduation requirements – and raise some money for local charities – by putting on an Italian cooking show.

He’ll demonstrate how to make a main course of smoked linguica (a Portuguese sausage), portabella mushrooms, artichoke hearts, and asparagus spears over a creamy, gorgonzola angel-hair pasta.

An appetizer and soup will proceed the main course. Desert will follow.

Lawrence works at the country club as a busboy, server, and cook.

He also runs cross-county and track – which helps prevent rich Italian food from making the slim teen-ager well-rounded, physically.

“I just love Italian food and I’m a runner so I eat pasta before a run. And I run tons of races so I’m eating all the time,” Lawrence said. But “I’m running it off.”

Joe Harben, sous-chef at the county club’s kitchen, said Lawrence is “a fast learner. He’s eager to learn.”

Proceeds from the event will go to the Nevada County Food Bank and the Nevada County Law Enforcement and Fire Protection Council.
