Charges eyed in car fatality

The California Highway Patrol is recommending a 20-year-old Nevada City man be charged with felony drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence because his girlfriend was killed in an October crash while he was driving

Emmet Stark Farrell was booked into the Contra Costa county jail in Martinez upon his release from a Walnut Creek hospital Oct. 25. He was flown by helicopter to the hospital after the 2:25 a.m., Oct. 21 accident on I-80 near Highway 4.

The wreck claimed the life of Christa Griffiths, 27, a Grass Valley dancer, artist and jewelry designer. The couple was returning from visiting Farrell’s family in the Bay Area. Griffiths died of massive head injuries after she was ejected, CHP reports claim.

Farrell was transported by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he remained in fair condition with head lacerations and a broken clavicle until Friday, a nursing supervisor said.

The vehicle, a 1992 Toyota Four-Runner registered to Griffiths, may have been traveling more than 80 miles per hour when it hit the center divider and overturned, according to CHP reports. The freeway was closed down for one hour after the wreck. Results from a blood test on Farrell were not yet available. The report has not yet been sent to the Contra Costa District Attorney’s office.
