Certified election results released in Higgins fire vote
The attempt to create a higher protection tax in the Higgins Fire Protection District has failed, according to certified results from the Nevada County Elections Office.
The Aug. 25 ballot measure garnered a total of 2,882 votes; 1,705 — or 59.16 percent — supported the measure, with 1,177 — 40.84 percent — opposed. The initiative needed 66.7 percent to pass.
The measure would have instituted a new $141-per-parcel tax on residences. The current $25 tax on residential parcels, on the books for 35 years, would have been repealed.
The effort to institute a higher tax rate in the Higgins Fire Protection District is the third attempt in as many years.
