Center for the Arts names interim executive director

Directors of the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley have named Pamela F. Comstock interim executive director, citing her experience and fundraising skills as boons to the downtown Grass Valley venue.

Center directors named the former executive director of the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation to the post this week. During her 17 years at the foundation, Comstock raised more than $12 million for the hospital, she said.

Comstock also will take the pressure off staff who have been carrying the load since the resignation of Krista Thomas in July. Thomas served as executive director of Center for the Arts nearly three years.

“We really needed someone to manage business after Krista resigned,” board president Richard Baker said this week.

“We know (Comstock’s) capacity. She has a good community reputation, knows nonprofits and had created strong fund development for the hospital. That is something we don’t have and need.”

Since taking early retirement in 2006 from the foundation due to health reasons, Comstock has provided consulting and coaching services to nonprofit boards and executives in Northern California.

“I love the idea of working at the Center for the Arts,” the longtime Grass Valley resident said. “The leadership represented on this board is textbook for success for a nonprofit. This place is ready to take the next step in serving our community, and I believe my experience can assist in this exciting time for the arts here in western Nevada County.”

“We’ve asked her to give us a full three months of her time to see whether she comes on permanent full time or helps develop and manage a search” for another executive director, Baker said.

“Right now, we’re looking to Pam to provide leadership for the organization, hoping she’ll work with the board to create substantive fund development, support the staff and board and tell the center’s story in the community.”
