Catlin land for sale at courthouse today

Two pieces of western Nevada County property which were scheduled for development in the last decade but fell victim to the sliding economy are up for sale today on the steps of the Nevada County Courthouse.

The Penn Valley Vineyards and the SouthHill development on the western end of Grass Valley are available to the highest bidder at 12:30 p.m. today.

Each were owned by the now-defunct Catlin Properties, a national developer with offices in Sacramento.

Catlin fell into bankruptcy in 2009 and founder Ben Catlin filed for personal bankruptcy last year.

According to a notice of default filed with the county, Catlin owes about $9.5 million on the planned mixed-use 65-acre SouthHill development and the 447-acre Penn Valley Vineyards (formerly Indian Springs).

Both properties go up for a trustee sale at 12:30 p.m. on the steps of the Nevada County Courthouse at 201 Church St., in downtown Nevada City.

Lodi-based vintner S&L Vineyards is leasing the 240-plus acres of the Penn Valley Vineyard in order to harvest the farm’s grapes. Last year, the grapes went unharvested after Catlin fell into default, effectively halving Nevada County’s grape output.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, S&L will host an open house at the Penn Valley Vineyard including a barbecue and sampling of local wines. The Vineyard is located at 16110 Indian Springs Road.
