Cascade Shores Firewise to host wildfire prevention education day June 20

Submitted to The Union

The Cascade Shores Firewise Community will host a Wildfire Prevention Education Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 20, at the Firehouse on Pasquale Road.

The event will include speakers on various aspects of fire prevention, with Cal Fire Unit Chief George Morris II, as the keynote speaker. The event will include a live fire extinguisher demonstration, Ray-Ray the Clown, fire safety exhibits for children, an evacuation guide review with preparation tips and fire department personnel and equipment.

During the past two years, the Cascade Shores Firewise Community Committee has accomplished many projects that have worked towards fire safety awareness and reduced hazardous fuel loading for forest fires in the community. They have partnered with the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County in these efforts and have been fortunate to utilize AmeriCorps crews over the past two years for these community benefit projects. They have also worked with the local DeMolay International young men pulling highly flammable Scotch broom.

The committee, in conjunction with the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services, updated the emergency preparedness and evacuation guide specifically for the Cascade Shores area. The Firewise Community Committee initiated, in cooperation with Nevada County Consolidated Fire District and CAL FIRE, a courtesy notice form to encourage property owners to voluntarily clean-up their property of vegetation fuels that would contribute to forest fires.
