Colorful abstracts, sweeping landscapes, still lifes and whimsical drawings are among the works of 10 local artists that will be auctioned on eBay starting Sunday.

It’s part of the silver jubilee celebrations for United Way of Nevada County.

“The money raised from the auction will go to our community investment fund, which is distributed to our Nevada County partner agencies,” said Lindy Beatie, executive director of United Way of Nevada County. “The partner agencies are health and human services agencies.”

The online auction will continue through March 20. The artworks can be seen at the United Way Web site ( A link will take viewers to the appropriate eBay auction page.

The 10 local artists showcased are Dale Smith, Larry Mills, Howard Levine, Mim Meakin, Liz Collins, Jerry Murphy, Margaret Swan, Susan Barry, Phil Brown and Robert Libutti.

“We just had a list of Nevada County artists, which we had compiled from the different art shows, and we called them,” Beatie said. “The first 10 we called said, ‘yes.'”

This is the first time United Way is doing an online art auction, Beatie said.

In coming months, United Way will host other events to celebrate 25 years in Nevada County. These events will include a “Barbecue battle of the sexes” in summer and an “Evening out,” in April, when four local restaurants will donate 10 percent of their proceeds from one evening to United Way.
