Business booms for towing firms

Sierra Burton, dispatcher at Fischer Towing in Grass Valley, said business has been “pretty nuts” due to the heavy snow that started early Friday morning.

“Too many to count,” Burton said regarding the number of vehicles Fischer towed by late Friday morning, estimating the number at 50 to 60. She said the most difficult areas to service were the higher elevations of Red Dog Road, which she said Fischer couldn’t access in some areas because of the snow.

Burton said many of the vehicles Fischer towed probably lost control because the drivers were going too fast.

“If possible, I wouldn’t drive,” she said.

Other area towing companies were also working at full throttle to put cars back on the road.

Kent Kilroy, owner of Kilroy Auto Dismantling, said his company was “very, very busy.”

He said the company’s four trucks were “still all out” late Friday morning due to roll-overs and other accidents caused by the treacherous driving conditions.

“We’ve had chain control on every highway we control,” said Juanita Holley, communication manager for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in Kingvale, where she said more than 46 inches of snow have fallen.

Holley said five Caltrans plows, which double function as sanders, were working to clear highways in Nevada County.

Despite heavy snow and winds gusting at 35 mph in Kingvale, Holley said Caltrans had encountered “no major problems” as of Friday afternoon.

“We were definitely ready for it,” she said.
