Burn ban is lifted; Nevada County residents can now get burn permits

People started arriving this week at the Higgins Corner fire station after learning the burn ban was rescinded.

The rush for burn permits was expected.

“People have been anxiously waiting,” Battalion Chief Jerry Good said.

The burn ban, lifted Monday, has led people across Nevada County to staffed fire stations, where they can get free permits. The permits allow them to burn their yard waste on permissible days, provided several requirements are met.

People must remain present at their burns and limit them to 4-by-4 foot areas. They also need water nearby.

According to Cal Fire Capt. Spc. John Hotchkiss, the decision to lift the ban involved local, state and regional officials.

“A lot of it was influenced by current precipitation and decreased fire activity,” Hotchkiss added.

Permits are required until the end of peak fire season, which hasn’t been determined.

People also must ensure they burn on permissible days, a decision made by the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District.

Western Nevada County residents should call 530-274-7928. The number for eastern Nevada County is 530-582-1027.

“We’re not out of our drought conditions, but things are a little bit safer,” Hotchkiss said.
