More funding for

chipping program

The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County has received a $30,000 grant from the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District for the Defensible Space Chipping Program.



The council contracts with local vendors to provide the door-to-door service to pick up green debris and chip it for free to help homeowners avert wildfire. During the 2006-2007 fiscal year, the council completed more than 1,400 work orders through the chipping program.

Center urges

calls to end war

The Peace Center of Nevada County is urging citizens to call California legislators and ask for an end to the Iraq War. The calls are part of a statewide effort to bring the troops home soon.

The center asks those interested to call the state Capitol at 202-224-3121 through Thursday for connections to legislators. For more information, call 478-0699.

Fair entry

deadline looms

Nevada County Fair exhibitors can still complete entry forms at http://www.nevada

countyfair.com through 5 p.m. Friday with no fee. Walk-in entries are due at the same time but will require a $2 fee.

Complete descriptions of all categories, from food to photographs, are available at the Web site or in the Fair’s Competition Handbook. The handbook is at area libraries, Chamber of Commerce offices and various sponsoring merchants.

There is also time to sign up for special food contests by 1 p.m., Aug. 3. The Gold Country Idol singing competition sign-ups are due by the same time and is limited to the first 20 applicants.
